The damage to businesses from the quarantine is going to be huge. Most businesses are going to suffer, but by far the worse off will be your small local businesses with physical locations.

The damage to small businesses will ripple out past the business owners to the employees and throughout the community.

So, what can we do to help?

Keep Spending

Just like everyone suddenly hoarding toilet paper is making things worse, so will everyone suddenly hoarding cash.

If you are lucky enough to have a stable income or lots of savings, please keep spending!

And I’m not talking about buying toilet paper. Big Bog Roll are doing just fine. I’m talking about the ‘unnecessary’ stuff made by small businesses.

The artisan ketchup, the slightly too trendy activewear, your overpriced smashed avocado on rye sourdough, your neighbourhood carpenter who suddenly has no business.

You know the businesses I mean. You walk past them every day.

Your Local Bakery Might Even be Delivering

You Might Even Be Offered Special Quarantine Discounts

So Follow Your Local Businesses On Social Media

Follow them even if you can’t afford to spend now. When this is over you can help each other get back on your feet.

They Will Tell You What To Do To Help

Buying Vouchers To Use When They Reopen

View this post on Instagram

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and the advice that has been issued regarding limiting social interactions, we are now offering a take-away menu that can be ordered online and collected from the arch. In addition we have amended our opening hours to be more accessible earlier in the evenings. The menu will evolve and change over the coming weeks and months and will always be kept up to date on our website. In addition, our wines will be available to take away at a reduction of 30% off the list price, we will have a selection of beers for takeaway and we’re working on a range of cocktails that can be taken away too. We hope this facility will allow you to continue to enjoy the food and drinks that we make at Arch Rivals at home throughout this difficult time for everyone. Gift cards are also available via the website too. Thank you for your support and we will hopefully see you all for a drink or two on the other side. Photo credit – @sarashakeel

Or By Keeping To Pay Your Local Club Memberships

If your a member of a locally owned club, then consider continuing to pay your fees even if you can’t use the facilities.

Whether that is a gym, sports club or dungeons & dragons team.

And Keep Supporting Innovation

The virus will end and when it does the world will continue.

So let’s keep supporting innovation and the arts. Whether that is funding through Kickstarter. Or buying early access to indie games. Or donating on Patreon to your favourite YouTuber.

If Businesses Are Going To Survive We Need To Help

There will be damage and fallout. But we can help minimise it by trying to keep business flowing.

And what am I doing? I am renting an apartment in Covent Garden and ordering all the food that I once would have had to queue for hours to try 馃槑.

* I’m purposely not linking to my businesses in this post. As I said in my monthly report, we are more prepared than most and will be fine. There are much more needy businesses out there.
